Agentic AI Meets the Digital Twin: Early Steps Toward Autonomous Control

IoT Analytics reported mid-year that industrial agentic AI had matured noticeably, with maintenance and troubleshooting the leading use case. Most of the solutions it tracked were model-agnostic, so customers are not tied to a single AI provider.

The more interesting development is the pairing of AI agents with digital twins. At Hannover Messe 2026, a demonstration from Dell used live PLC data from a digital twin of a brewery centrifuge to feed a large language model, which spotted boundary violations and triggered small SCADA-level adjustments within limits defined by humans. Others, including PepsiCo, are using agents to simulate and refine changes before they reach the physical plant.

The design lesson is in the guardrails. Successful examples keep the AI advisory or tightly bounded, with deterministic control logic and safety systems remaining entirely independent of it. Research on multi-agent digital twins for predictive maintenance on edge devices points the same way, stressing remaining-useful-life estimates and explainability as the keys to operator acceptance.

We see AI as something to layer on top of well-structured control and SCADA data, not a substitute for it, which makes clean tag models, historians and alarm design more important rather than less.

Control Systems Design

Where required, IMSI can take a project from the concept stage through to full production. Whether you know what you need or just know the problem, IMSI can work with you to achieve a solution. In terms of control system design, focusing on the bigger picture is essential. As an external partner, we gain a universal understanding in the nature and design of your control system, developing automation solutions that will enhance the performance of your entire operation.
Reviewing your system objectives both in the short and long term, we can help identify system design solutions to achieve improved reliability, efficiency and productivity. We verify whether your current control system diagrams are still relevant, before using our detailed analysis to design the new system.
Our fully integrated solutions include Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), variable-speed drives (VSDs), servos, motor control centres (MCCs), SCADA/HMI systems, machine vision and safety systems.
