While traditional PLC platforms have dominated control system design for decades, Beckhoff's PC-based control philosophy has continued to gain ground across manufacturing, packaging, and process industries since 2021. By running real-time control software (TwinCAT 3) on standard industrial PC hardware rather than dedicated PLC processors, Beckhoff blurs the line between controller, motion system, and computing platform.

Recent generations of Beckhoff industrial PCs have brought substantially more processing power to the panel, enabling a single controller to handle high-speed EtherCAT motion, vision processing, and data logging simultaneously — workloads that would traditionally require separate hardware.

This has made PC-based control particularly attractive for machine builders who need flexible, software-defined automation platforms that can scale from a simple machine to a high-axis-count motion application without a hardware change.

For systems integrators, the appeal is consistency: one engineering environment (TwinCAT 3) spans PLC logic, motion control, and HMI development, reducing the number of toolchains a team needs to master across a multi-vendor automation landscape.

Control Systems Design

Where required, IMSI can take a project from the concept stage through to full production. Whether you know what you need or just know the problem, IMSI can work with you to achieve a solution. In terms of control system design, focusing on the bigger picture is essential. As an external partner, we gain a universal understanding in the nature and design of your control system, developing automation solutions that will enhance the performance of your entire operation.
Reviewing your system objectives both in the short and long term, we can help identify system design solutions to achieve improved reliability, efficiency and productivity. We verify whether your current control system diagrams are still relevant, before using our detailed analysis to design the new system.
Our fully integrated solutions include Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), variable-speed drives (VSDs), servos, motor control centres (MCCs), SCADA/HMI systems, machine vision and safety systems.
