OPC UA and MQTT Sparkplug Are Converging on the Unified Namespace

For years, OPC UA and MQTT were presented as rivals. The 2026 consensus is that they are layers of the same architecture. OPC UA normalises device-level data at the machine, an edge or DataOps layer adds context, and MQTT with Sparkplug B distributes that data across the plant and up to the enterprise.

The Unified Namespace (UNS) is the pattern that ties this together: a single, structured hierarchy through which every system publishes and consumes current state, rather than each system integrating point-to-point with every other. It is a pattern rather than a product, and is most commonly built on an MQTT broker with Sparkplug B, which adds typed metrics and birth and death messages so consumers always know whether a device is alive.

For SCADA, this changes its role. Instead of being the centre of the data world, SCADA becomes one participant in the namespace, publishing its tags and subscribing to data from MES, ERP and analytics tools. Edge gateways such as Ignition Edge, Kepware and HighByte typically bridge from PLC protocols into the broker.

This is shaping how we design new Web SCADA systems: tag models and naming conventions are agreed up front so the data is useful well beyond the operator screens.

Web SCADA Design

WebSCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition via web technologies) is a modern evolution of traditional SCADA systems. It allows operators to monitor and control industrial processes remotely through web interfaces, offering:

  • Real-Time Visualization: Access dashboards from any device, anywhere.
  • Scalability: Easily integrate new devices and expand system capabilities.
  • Cost Efficiency: Reduces infrastructure and maintenance costs compared to legacy systems.
  • Security & Accessibility: Implements secure protocols while enabling multi-user access across locations.

Industry 4.0 with IoT and WebSCADA empowers manufacturers to build smart factories that are agile, efficient, and future-ready. It’s not just a technological upgrade—it’s a strategic transformation.
