Siemens, in partnership with Microsoft, introduced Industrial Copilot — a generative AI assistant built into engineering tools including TIA Portal — bringing large language model technology directly into PLC and HMI development workflows for the first time at scale.
Rather than generating control logic from scratch, Industrial Copilot is positioned as an assistant: helping engineers query existing code, generate documentation, troubleshoot faults by interpreting alarm logs in natural language, and accelerate routine programming tasks within a structured, standards-compliant framework.
The announcement marked one of the clearest signals yet that generative AI is moving from office productivity tools into core engineering software, with other major automation vendors expected to follow with similar copilot-style assistants of their own.
As with any AI-assisted code generation, the underlying discipline doesn't change — generated logic still needs to be reviewed, tested, and validated against the Functional Design Specification before it reaches a live PLC, just as hand-written code would be.
